Artist Statement: “My photography in “Sacred Thresholds” captures the quiet, spiritual
awakening of the landscapes of the American Southwest. Working primarily during the
sunrise in Arizona and Utah, I seek out the precise moments when first light, a fleeting
window when the harsh terrain is softened by warmth and shadow, transforms the vast
desert landscapes and the ancient geological formations. For me, dawn is a magical
threshold where time slows down. My work aims to document not just the physical
geometry of these ancient geological formations, but the transcendent feeling of
witnessing the earth wake up. Through my lens, I invite viewers to step into this sacred
space and experience the profound stillness and renewal of a new day. To bring this vivid
morning light into physical space, each piece is produced as a 20x30 metal print,
enhancing the radiant, luminous energy of the brilliant landscape of the American
Southwest.”
Artist Bio: Lisa Malloy Brown is a semi-retired family physician from Montross, Virginia, who
uses landscape and nature photography to escape the stressors affiliated with the
corporatization of healthcare. In her quest, she has chosen to capture the spiritual
essence of the American Southwest. For the past decade, she has dedicated her practice
to documenting the canyons, mesas, and red rock formations of Arizona and Utah at the
precise moments of dawn and the evening “Golden Hour.” Driven by a deep reverence for
the land and the desire for personal renewal and rest, Lisa translates the magical stillness
of the early morning light and setting of the sun into vibrant 20x30 metal prints that
emphasize the radiant, luminous energy and quiet stillness of the American Southwest
landscape. Her work invites viewers to step into a sacred threshold and stand in awe of the
earth’s daily renewal.
